Technical Overview
Software solutions for remotely managing desktop and/or server power consumption
Load Balancing: Alpiron Suite provides power management for workstations and/or physical and virtual server resources. Alpiron Suite is designed to automatically power down workstations and servers when they are running idle (example: after hours and on weekends). The Alpiron Suite platform operates in conjunction with standard load balancing and virtualization solutions that distributes application loads across available servers.
Policy-Based Controls: Alpiron Suite enables administrators to use policy-driven controls to intelligently power servers off and on in response to preset conditions including:
- Time of Day: powering down servers at the end of the workday and on weekends or
- “Keep-Free Capacity”: if user sessions reach a certain threshold, Alpiron Suite will power on additional servers to maintain application service level guarantees.
Wake-On-Lan: Alpiron Suite’s Wake-On-LAN capabilities automatically awaken workstations and servers according to administrator-established policies so that:
- End-users will be able to sit down at their desks and start working when they arrive every morning.
- Patching or remote maintenance can easily be completed after hours in pre-determined maintenance windows.
Hardware and Software Agnostic: Alpiron Suite functions across all hardware platforms and network environments with no reconfiguration; is also compatible with all data center monitoring programs.
Non-Disruptive: Implementing power management without disrupting the user experience is paramount. Alpiron Suite’s flexible policies:
- Gracefully shut down applications prior to powering off the underlying system.
- Will not power-down a system (if programmed as such by the administrator) if any user sessions are active.
GUI Interface: Alpiron Console incorporates a graphical user interface which allows administrators to interact with Alpiron Suite controls in a simple and efficient manner.
Real-Time Monitoring: Real-time metrics include Status, Load, CPU Usage, RAM Usage, Capacity and Reporting.
Reporting: Alpiron’s reporting features allow administrators to:
- Monitor the effectiveness of their policies and see where there might be opportunity or need for policy adjustments.
- Determine resulting cost savings and ROI.
- Log all power events to an event log to provide a history.
Safely Closes Applications: Before initiating the process of powering down any device, Alpiron Suite sends messages to all users asking them to finish work or log off and then log on again. After a grace period to allow these users time to complete their transactions, Alpiron Suite will safely close any remaining applications before logging off the user session. Only then will Alpiron Suite power off the controlled server. If the IT administrator prefers to sidestep this process, Alpiron Suite may also be instructed to shut down only servers with zero active sessions.
Network-wide Remote Power-up and Power-down:Alpiron Suite’s proprietary technologies incorporate the ability to start and stop any type of remote programmable device, such as servers and workstations, with no need to modify or configure any network element including routers, switches, firewalls, DNS service.
Startup Any Device Anywhere: Building upon Wake-On-LAN technology, Alpiron deploys an enterprise wide wakeup methodology that starts up any remote programmable device
