Highlights:
Net generation in the United States dropped by 7.6 percent from July 2008 to July 2009. This was the 12th consecutive month that net generation was down compared to the same calendar month in the prior year.
The average retail price of electricity for July 2009 was 10.42 cents per kilowatthour (kWh), 1.8 percent higher than June 2009 when the average retail price of electricity was 10.24 cents per kWh, but 2.9 percent lower than July 2008, when the price was 10.73 cents per kWh.
The July 2009 average commercial retail price was 10.72 cents per kWh, a 3.5-percent decrease from July 2008 and up 2.0 percent from June 2009. The average industrial retail price for July 2009 fell to 7.12 cents per kWh, an 8.5-percent decrease from July 2008 and down from 7.18 cents per kWh in June 2009. Year-to-date 2009, average retail prices increased to 9.95 cents per kWh, a 3.5-percent increase over the same period for 2008 (Figure 4).
